Pandya's crowning achievement as a leader has occurred in a place where it is rarely anticipated – an expansion team with little history and modest pre-season aspirations. He was appointed team captain for the newly-born Gujarat Titans just before the 2022 season and led their underwhelming team to an IPL title in their first year — something they certainly lacked in the side since it was quite a marathon process that took them to the IPL title, considering they were just as underwhelming in their debut year. His new success, too, brought a new boost to his international leadership prospects. He was soon appointed into India's T20I Captaincy after a World Cup in which Rohit Sharma had stepped back from the format and Pandya, for the briefest of the times, found himself in the limelight as the potential T20I Format Captain for India in the years to come.

One of the most discussed trades in IPL history, Pandya was able to return to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season where he instantly replaced club legend Rohit Sharma as captain. It was a bitter sweet moment as it were, as the Mumbai fans had to grapple with their leader returning into the pack, an event that happened after his initial eventful exit in 2022. It was kind of a whole ninety degrees turn: The team that launched him as an uncapped teenager was now relying on him again, years and a championship later.

The outcome of the last few years hasn't matched the fairy-tale of his Gujarat days. Mumbai have fallen to the fringes in two of his three years, falling to ninth in 2026. His downfall has left his captaincy and perhaps his future with the team at question and his management has already started hunting for his replacement.

Pandya is indeed at a corner today. Mumbai Indians are said to be thinking of a leadership change and his name came in a trade with a number of teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. He even reportedly mulled the idea of returning to his Mother Squad – Gujarat Titans, where his captaincy was established – but apparently it did not make any headway as he wants it back, the Gujarat club being “in no hurry” to offer his captaincy after Shubman Gill enjoyed an impressive spell in the position.

The tale of a player who has won a title wearing the captaincy, led his country, left an indelible mark on world cricket as one of the game's top finishers. Fewer have had the blessing of a championship season as captain and the greatest high pressure of a team's performance being watched closely by the most from within a handful of seasons.

All of his upcoming twelve months, whether it's during the auction period, while trading or making his final choice, or once he has settled in to his host club, will play a major part in shaping Hardik Pandya's legacy as a player and a leader.
