Road to Back-to-Back: How RCB Navigated IPL 2026 from Auction Table to Trophy Lift

Finals is not the starting point of championships. They start in the auction house, their coaches' discussions in the pre-season fitness camp, and in the group of coaches who are trying to determine how to beat the other guys who were all studying last year's champ while they were away on vacation. If the story of RCB towards ultimate glory of IPL 2026 is anything to go by, then the process started months before the toss circle of the Narendra Modi Stadium, when Rajat Patidar was standing there. The Auction: Defending Without Overconfidence

RCB had assembled their 2025 team in cold-blooded manner for the 2025 mega auction. The 2026 auction Race Progenitor's Core was solid with a few measured reinforcements. The team management at the time reiterated that it would be necessary to not compromise the victory culture for the supposed “improvements.” All the bowling options – Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar, Rasikh were unaltered. The key addition was envisaged to be Venkatesh Iyer who was currently taking over the Phil Salt instead of the injured Phil.Venkatesh Iyer was considered the big signing to stop Phil Salt underperforming (who was managing the injury throughout much of the season). The sense of the logic was: "If it's not broke, don't fix it.

This approach proved to be the correct one all season long. It was a team that was clearly the same to run the yards into the Ahmedabad field – players– both in quality and attitude – and was the same that won in 2025. No wholesale revisions or no desperate star purchases. The data was the franchise's data and it believed in them.

Building the Foundation in the Early Season

RCB had its share of ups and downs to its initial few weeks. So, at this very Ahmedabad police park, the crowd had looked on as the aggrieved GT were bowled out in 15.5 overs after being faced with 155, was telling of another milestone. It had informed the team something significant: their 2025 success had been noted and studied, and it was counteracted. All the teams in 2026 had been better read for face-to-face RCB matchups, simply in terms of better plans being in place. The loss to Ahmedabad hurt then, but helped this time. In this camp, the team openly discussed what was changed by GT, how Rashid was being employed, how the batting order was organized, etc.

The mid-season was the time when RCB found their rhythm. But successive victories in weeks six and seven, with the latter coming in a pasting of Mumbai Indians at the hands of Rasikh Salam, gave them the wind in their sails. Kohli was hitting 167 runs per season, Iyer is doing exploits at the boundaries and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was starting the season at 167 for the wicket.

Absence of Phil Salt

The biggest challenge for the team was Phil Salt's hand injury which led to him missing a lot of the season.  Venkatesh Iyer was so effective in his absence, when his boundary-hitting 19 off nine in the Qualifier 1 powerplay, that some began to doubt whether Salt would regain his place, even if he was fit. However, it became the strength, where a problem once was.

Qualifier 1 — The Dress Rehearsal

The next obstacle turned out to be fittingly GT. RCB's winning at the hands of the same opposition as they faced in the final was not only a statement of league table virtue, but also tactical wisdom. The selection of Jacob Duffy was informed by his three wickets off GT in that match as well, which was the theme of the discussion regarding the final. His three wickets off GT in that game being a part of the discussion made to choose him over Suyash Sharma for the final. Both the coaching staff and the players kept watching the video of Qualifier 1 tirelessly for the 72 hours leading up to the final. The coaching staff and players obsessively watched the deluxe of Qualifier 1 for 72 hours before the final. They were aware of GT's protection areas, where Rashid is going to be pushed, their approach(s) to getting Rashid moving.

The Final — Execution Delivered

The Final revealed the fact that although RCB had suffered setback in the league against their rivals, their injury problem with Salt, and their ongoing adaptability that had always been a hallmark of their campaign had created a team that could perform when pressure was on. All that Rashid had to do was dismiss two top order batters in the same over when the ball broke open and it wasn't a panicking squad. This had been a team that had come this way and been put this way before. Special Kohli did the dolging. But, the team he had coached had been honed to perfection during the season.
